The 6 day course introduces students to the practical and theoretical aspects of icon writing. Interpretations of iconographic symbolism and the theological and anthropological basis of each step of the process are presented in parallel to the technical instruction. By the end of an intensive workshop, the beginner completes writing of an icon. No artistic experience is required of a beginning student. The Prosopon School does not hold the preparation of professional icon writers as its foremost purpose, although such a possibility is not excluded. The main goal of study is rather to cultivate a clearer consciousness of the Image of God according to which man was created. The student is (re)introduced to the teaching of the Church through the language of line, light, and color. Notions are drawn from Scripture, Tradition, and Patristic Thought. Through the visual language of icon, the student may move toward a better vision of the self, the world, and the Divine.

The students of Intermediate level will work on the icon of "Prophet Ezekiel”. The icon will resemble the attached example though it will not look exactly like the ancient prototype and will be based on a different drawing. The drawing will be provided to the registered students in advance and the instructions for the preparatory work will be given. All students of the Intermediate level are expected to come to class with their own board, the drawing transferred and the gilding complete.

You may register for the Intermediate Level if you have written 3 or more icons with the Prosopon School and can complete all the required preparatory work, i.e. gilding, etc., in advance.

If you haven't done icons with the Prosopon School, or if you have done less than 3 icons with the school, please register for a Beginner Level. All students registered for this level will be working on the icon of Archangel and will be provided with an icon board and all other materials.
